Research activity
The research activity of the Laboratory of Metallurgy focused on topics related to materials for manufacturing and for energy applications. In detail, experience in the following topics has been developed:
- Physical metallurgy of solidification and solid-state phase transformations.
- Processing of metallic materials from the melt (arc-melting, rapid solidification and copper mould casting) and in the solid state (mechanical alloying).
- Additive manufacturing of alloys: study of the influence of processing conditions on phase selection (non-equilibrium phase diagram calculation), microstructure and mechanical properties.
- Characterization of the thermal stability, thermophysical properties and phase transformations in equilibrium and metastable metallic systems, by means of thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and microscopy techniques.
- Development of thermodynamic and kinetic models for phase transformations in metallic systems (e.g. Calphad). Calculation of phase diagrams and thermodynamic properties using ab initio techniques.
- High entropy alloys: prediction of single-phase stability, synthesis and characterization.
- De-alloying as a route for the synthesis of functional nanoporous metals.
- Materials and systems for solid-state hydrogen storage and compression.
- Electrolytes for all solid-state batteries.
- Ab initio calculations of thermophysical properties of materials for batteries and hydrogen storage.
- Thermoelectric materials for waste heat harvesting: synthesis and characterization.
- Materials for radiation shielding in the space.

Conventional synthesis and characterization techniques (arc-melting, induction melting, X-ray diffraction, calorimetry, optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, microindentation, nanoindentation) are available in our laboratory, allowing experimental study of structural, microstructural, thermal, chemical, physical and mechanical properties of materials.
In the last four decades, expertise has been achieved in the development of amorphous alloys and metastable metallic materials. Processing of alloys using non-equilibrium techniques (melt spinning, mould and wire casting, mechanical alloying) is used to obtain this kind of material, showing soft magnetic properties and interesting mechanical properties (high elastic deformation, low Young modulus, high yield strength).
More recently, a comparative study of Al-based commercial alloys obtained by additive manufacturing and rapid solidification showed the influence of process parameters on phase selection, microstructures and mechanical properties.
A novel class of material is represented by high entropy alloys forming a multicomponents (N≥5) single phase. A predictive model for single phase stability was developed on the basis of thermodynamic criteria. Such alloys show a potential for refractory, corrosion and radiation resistant applications, as well as for processing by additive manufacturing.
Another field of research is the synthesis of porous metals by selective chemical de-alloying. Using this method, the phases containing the less noble element can be selectively removed, leading to the formation of a porous material where the dimension of the pores depends on the microstructure of the starting alloy. Metallic alloys showing high surface area and interesting catalytic properties can be obtained with this method.
In order to obtain a deep understanding of the fundamental physical properties for the investigated materials, theoretical modeling is performed to compare simulation and experimental results. In particular, modeling of thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams by means of CALPHAD and ab-initio methods can be used to describe and understand experimental results.
The research has been also focused on the study of materials for energy storage and harvesting.
The former includes intermetallic compounds and complex hydrides with high potential for various applications. The capacity, cyclability, thermodynamic and kinetic properties of these materials are experimentally characterized by means of PCI and high-pressure DSC facilities, coupled with standard structural characterisation. The integration of solid-state hydrogen tanks with fuel cells for stationary and transport applications are developed. Mor recently, metal hydrides are studied for solid-state hydrogen compression.
The latter include thermoelectric materials for harvesting of waste heat and its conversion into electricity. The activities focus on the processing of thermoelectric materials for the medium and high temperature ranges (e.g. Half-Heusler and Heusler alloys, AgSbTe2, skutterudites, Zn4Sb3) and the correlation between microstructure/structure and thermoelectric properties.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies are running on various processes, including hydrogen-based technologies and recycling of materials.
Archeometallurgy studies are performed on ancient metallic artefacts as well as on slags.
