Review of synthetic APIs processes in a sustainable key: green solvents and biocatalysis
The aim of this PhD project is twofold: firstly, to integrate the use of green solvents into traditional chemical transformations, thereby reducing environmental impact; and secondly, to develop biocatalytic systems for their incorporation into organic synthesis, aiming for more sustainable and efficient processes.
For the first goal, Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) will be used as green protic solvents to promote the Wittig reaction in a more sustainable environment, avoiding the use of toxic and flamable Volatile Organic Solvents. Screening of the reaction conditions as well as scale-up and applicability of the protocol will be investigated.
The same green solvents, DES, have been proposed as media for biocatalytic reactions. Imine reductases (IRED) will be used as biocatalysts for the chiral production of relevant amines with the use of DES as reaction media at mild conditions. Moreover, the project will explore the feasibility of self-production of the enzymes used, as an alternative to costly commercial enzymes.
The research project has been co-financed by the PON D.M. 1061 scholarship in collaboration with StrigoLab s.r.l.
